Ray Prosser Obituary, Death: Tragic Collision on U.S. 378 Claims Life of Florence County Motorcyclist, 73-Year-Old Ray Prosser, in Head-On Crash with Commercial Truck in South Carolina’s Brewington Road Area
On Friday, October 25, 2024, a 73-year-old motorcyclist named Ray Prosser of Florence County, South Carolina, died in a fatal collision with a commercial vehicle. The accident happened around midday on U.S. Highway 378 (also known as Myrtle Beach Highway) near Brewington Road, a busy road that connects major routes between Florence and Myrtle Beach.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Corporal David Jones, the incident occurred under unusual circumstances, surprising many in the area. Prosser, who was on a 1990 Honda motorcycle, had somehow gotten into the westbound lanes while driving east. This misunderstanding resulted in a devastating head-on collision with an incoming 1985 Oshkosh commercial truck. Tragically, the hit killed Prosser, who was pronounced dead at the site.
The truck driver, whose identity has not been revealed, escaped injury and was found to be physically unhurt. Although the driver was unharmed, he remained on the site to fully cooperate with the investigating authorities. He also supplied a narrative of the incident, which has been extremely helpful to the Highway Patrol’s inquiry.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol quickly arrived on the scene to control the situation, direct traffic, and launch an investigation into the events leading up to the incident. The presence of law enforcement and emergency personnel drew the attention of many people in the vicinity, and traffic was rerouted to ensure that the investigation could go without interruption and to safeguard passersby from any hazards near the incident.
Early preliminary findings show that Prosser’s motorcycle was already riding against oncoming traffic when the crash occurred, but the reasons for his driving in the wrong lane are unclear. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting an extensive investigation to determine what caused the biker to enter the westbound lane in error. They are looking into a variety of probable contributing causes, including mechanical faults with the motorcycle, road conditions, and potential driver uncertainty, particularly because Mr. Prosser was an elderly rider on an older model motorcycle.
Investigators are anticipated to study security footage, analyze evidence recovered at the scene, and maybe speak with witnesses who may have seen the biker in the minutes preceding the fatal tragedy.
