Daniella “Dana” Choquette Car Accident; Daniella “Dana” Choquette Passed Away Unexpectedly

On October 12, a sad car accident killed Daniella “Dana” Choquette, a fourth-grade student at McKinley Elementary School, as well as her parents, Mercy and Sasha Choquette.

The family was driving on the 15 Freeway on their way to Las Vegas when the single-car catastrophe occurred, sending shockwaves across their town and beyond.

McKinley Principal Daniela Weiner delivered a poignant statement to parents and staff on Tuesday expressing the school’s great grief over the death of this loving family.

She expressed condolences on behalf of the McKinley community to Sasha Choquette’s daughter, who has survived the tragedy. “During this time of great sorrow, we want you to know that we are here to support you and care deeply,” Weiner assured parents and colleagues.

Dana was recalled as a bright and charismatic student who had a pleasant personality and gained many friends. Principal Weiner lauded Dana’s artistic abilities, noting her work on a recent student council campaign.

“In true form, she went above and beyond by creating not one, but three campaign posters,” Weiner told me. “She was really lovely, always wanting to help, and she and her parents made frequent donations to the classroom.

They cared a much. Dana’s presence, friendliness, and giving will never be forgotten. We will miss her dearly.” McKinley is committed to provide resources and aid to grieving students and families during this difficult time.

Students who need to talk about their thoughts or process the loss can speak with the school counselor, school psychologist, or mental health specialists. On Tuesday, the school conducted a staff meeting to provide parents with sensitive conversation points for discussing the tragedy with their children.
