Iowa State Patrol announced Thursday that Mandy Wendland, 45, of Nebraska was killed at approximately 7 a.m. after being struck by a van while walking along Interstate 80
On Thursday morning, a pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 80 near Dexter while walking after her car broke down.
The woman was identified as Mandy Wendland, 45, of Omaha, Nebraska. She and another person were walking down the freeway when Wendland entered the travel lanes and was hit by a motorist, according to a crash report.
Wendland was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The incident is still being investigated, and officials aren’t clear how she wound up in the driving lane, according to Sgt. Alex Dinkla, an Iowa State Patrol spokesperson.
At before 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Iowa State Patrol officers responded to a crash on westbound I-80 at the 98.6 mile marker near Dexter in Madison County.
Dinkla confirmed that no charges had been filed in the collision as of Friday morning.
